"About Project
The Perpetual Presents Project:

A collaborative, student-led project between Glasgow School of Art and Byam Shaw School of Art, London.

We are interested in the collaborative process of curatorial practice. This is a student-led but educational institution-based project. During this exchange, we aim to blur the line between the original artwork and the documentation of that artwork: this is our investigation into the value of the ‘original’ in relation to that of the ‘displaced’ artwork.

The project will culminate in simultaneous opening nights. This simultaneity will be inserted into the space of the galleries with a live video feed between the two places, making visible the sum total of all the work submitted, and the two audiences gathered for one event.

Every work submitted will be included in the final exhibitions and listed in the catalog.

The logistics of submission

Through discussions, we have decided that this is about interrogating the single photograph as documentary medium. You will only submit one photograph of your original work to the other city."

This double movement proper to the modern cogito explains why the ‘I think’ docs not, in its case, lead to the evident truth of the ‘I am’. Indeed, as soon as the T think’ has shown itself to be embedded in a density throughout which it is quasi-present, and which it animates, though in an equivocal semi-dormant, semi-wakeful fashion, it is no longer possible to make it lead on to the affirmation ‘I am’. For can I, in fact, say that I am this language I speak, into which my thought insinuates itself to the point of finding in it the system of all its own possibilities, yet which exists only in the weight of sedimentations my thought will never be capable of actualizing altogether? Can I say that I am this labour I perform with my hands, yet which eludes me not only when I have finished it, but even before I have begun it? Can I say that I am this life I sense deep within me, but which envelops me both in the irresistible time that grows side by side with it and poses me for a moment on its crest, and in the imminent time that prescribes my death? I can say, equally well, that I am and that I am not all this; the cogito does not lead to an affirmation of being, but it does lead to a whole series of questions concerned with being: What must I be, I who think and who am my thought, in order to be what I do not think, in order for my thought to be what I am not? What is this being, then, that shimmers and, as it were, glitters in the opening of the cogito, yet is not sovereignly given in it or by it? What, then, is the connection, the difficult link, between being and thought? What is man’s being, and how can it be that that being, which could so easily be characterized by the fact that ‘it has thoughts’ and is possibly alone in having them, has an ineradicable and fundamental relation to the unthought? A form of reflection is established far removed from both Cartesianism and Kantian analysis, a form that involves, for the first time, man’s being in that dimension where thought addresses the unthought and articulates itself upon it.

In one sense, Kant goes further than Rimbaud. For Rimbaud‘s famous formula ‘I is another‘ relates back strangely to an Aristotelian way of thinking: ‘Too bad for the wood which finds itself a violin! if the copper wakes up a bugle, that is not its fault‘ . .. For Rimbaud, it is thus a question of the determining form of a thing in so far as it is distinguished from the matter in which it is embodied: a mould as in Aristotle. For Kant, it is a question of the form of time in general, which distinguishes between the act of the I, and the ego to which this act is attributed: an infinite modulation, no longer a mould. Thus time moves into the subject, in order to distinguish the Ego from the lin it. It is the form under which the I affects the ego, that is, the way in which the mind affects itself. It is in this sense that time as immutable form, which could no longer be defined by simple succession, appeared as the form of interiority (inner sense), whilst space, which could no longer be defined by coexistence, appeared for its part as the form of exteriority. ‘Form of interiority‘ means not only that time is internal to us, but that our interiority constantly divides us from ourselves, splits us in two: a splitting in two which never runs its course, since time has no end. A giddiness, an oscillation which constitutes time.

My Grandparents' house.

My Grandfather designed and built the house.

My Grandmother designed the garden which together they created.

This is the house of creativity that I grew up visiting.

They must move out of this house now into a smaller one.

These are the last photographs I will get to take of it.

I made this video back in Term 1, relating to the casting workshop, when I cast cups and saucers with plaster. I thought about what they were used for .. drinking tea. Water is boiled .. somewhere along the line tea is added, depending on how one makes it, and this 'dangerously' hot liquid is then poured into such delicate objects. I decided to cast another cup and saucer with wax and pour tea into them in the hope of melting and destroying the cup and saucer ... but ... they did not melt at all. I tried so many times, even trying to boil the water for longer... Since nothing really happened while filming I decided to edit the frames to create at least some sort of drama/tension. I cut a lot of frames, repeated some, mixed a lot up ... etc. The interweaving jumps and pauses throughout the video reminded me of J.S Bach's Concerto for Harpsichord No. 1 in D minor (Allegro) 1052 (yes I am a complete classical music geek). I decided to record the Concerto over the video and, although it is incomplete and unfinished, what results is both dramatic and humourous.

My Russian Ancestry

My Mother's interest into our family's history has existed for as long as I can remember. Handed down to her were numerous family trees dating back as far the 1400s and, more recently, an extremely old and beautiful leather photograph album containing Russian high society figures. This was owned by my ancestor Esther Sumner, whose photograph is displayed in the photograph album.

Although all of the text accompanying the photographs is in Russian, having lived most of her childhood in Cyprus, my Mother was able to identify some of the letters because of their similarities to those of the Greek Alphabet and was therefore able to identify some of the people. Eventually, after much research, she was able to confirm two of the people as being Dagmar Of Denmark and Tsar Alexander III. How we are related to them is not yet clear.

I have decided to put up some earlier art work as I believe you cannot move forward without addressing the past. I won't go into to much detail of the process of the works but will brush over what I feel is neccessary in order to understand the final pieces.

Emotions

Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions. "
Stoicism was a school of Hellenistic Philosophy founded in Athens in the early 3rd century BC by Zeno of Citium. They believed that negative or destructive emotions were false judgements and that a sage-a person who had attained moral and intellectual perfection-would not undergo them. Stoicism teaches one to control one's mind as a means of bettering oneself.

Francisco Goya created works of art that, unlike other art of that time, told stories of war, of nightmares ... all depicting and/or evoking strong emotions.

People tend to let their emotions take over ... which leads to overthinking .. which can lead to depression. A while ago I found a series of photographs of my mother taken when she was a child and in each photograph she, clearly, displays a variety of positive emotions.. some even amusing. A large black and white photocopy of the photographs hangs comfortably on the wall that my bed faces. Without intending to, I look at it everyday ... and each day the image is a sort of teaching ... to aspire to be like that small girl.

Food sculptures- the proof is in the making

The other night I went to a sushi making class with my brother as part of his Japanese lessons. We learned how to make inarizusha, nigirizushi (にぎり) and makizushi (巻き).

The process of making makizushi is so much that of a creative (and difficult) one that you don't want to go and destroy the sushi by eating it. It makes you appreciate the food and eat it slowly ... taking time to admire the aesthetics instead of scoffing it down like a fat westener.
